the AU review sat down with Jimmy Williams from Steve Lane and the Autocrats earlier in the year while in Canada, talking about Canadian adventure, plans for recording and balancing five or six different projects at once. Booking last minute shows, networking and enjoying touring are but a day in the life for Jimmy.
This Canadian adventure is a short, but sweet one. "We have 2 showcases... we were at The Painted Lady for the Footstomp (and the AU review) Showcase... it's a small little bar but it runs like clockwork". Bands were everywhere waiting to be discovered and positive crowds followed, including Jimmy. "People in Toronto love their music and love going to bars...at each show you get to see 3 or 4 acts...I went to see a band from Ottawa called Amos The Transparent. Fantastic band".
Good gigs do come at a cost though. "We flew in last Thursday night and on Friday morning we went to register and pick up a show for that night. We were jetlagged and didn't know what was going on". Along with a hectic schedule their setup changed a bit for CMW. "Our drummer couldn't make the trip so we picked up a session drummer from Toronto. He just fitted in perfectly with the style of music...we're a 4 piece, 2 guitars, bass drums. All the material is written by Steve lane and according to the program we are 'Americana Indie Rock', so get your head around that!".
Back in Australia, playing with Steve Lane isn't Jimmy's only focus. "I play with 5 other bands so generally I've got work on...I enjoying being on the road...I have a band called The Mockbells where I play piano, various bluesey old school R'n'B bands, solo stuff and I'm a singer and a songwriter...So I generally try and fill my week up with music".
